La littérature éphémère consiste, depuis les débuts de l’imprimerie, en un ensemble de textes imprimés dont la fragilité intrinsèque et l’usage ont le plus souvent entraîné la disparition. Il s’agit d’ouvrages modestes, reproduits en masse et vendus à bas prix, destinés à un public large incluant les personnes peu instruites, voire analphabètes : on y trouve ballades, versions abrégées de romans ou de pièces de théâtre à la mode, récits d’événements réels ou fictifs d’importance nationale ou locale faisant la part belle aux bandits et aux assassins, poésies, chansons et comédies, calendriers ou encore écrits pieux. Ces documents fournissent un pendant essentiel à l’étude de la grande Histoire et des oeuvres littéraires canoniques. Ils apportent par ailleurs un éclairage différent sur de nombreux domaines, notamment la culture populaire, l’histoire du livre, la circulation des idées et des images, les processus de réécriture ou encore l’importance de la transmission orale.

Si les textes et les récits publiés sous la forme d’éphémères imprimés survivent encore à certains endroits du globe, ils font désormais partie du passé en Europe. La disparition d’une activité éditoriale traditionnelle, qui induit celle des documents eux-mêmes, pousse à leur étude et oblige à la conservation d’une mémoire qui se perd. Genève, ville importante pour l’histoire de l’imprimerie européenne, est également le lieu de conservation de plusieurs collections de feuillets francophones et anglophones, de « pliegos de cordel » espagnols et d’imprimés brésiliens. C’est dans cette ville qu’EPHEMERA HELVETICA, l’Association suisse pour l’étude des imprimés éphémères, a choisi d’établir son siège.

L’association EPHEMERA HELVETICA a pour but de promouvoir l’étude de ces imprimés auprès des chercheuses et chercheurs établis en Suisse, sans distinction de langue, de nationalité ou de champ d’étude. De la linguistique à la musicologie, en passant par l’histoire, la sociologie et l’ethnologie, quel que soit le territoire étudié, EPHEMERA HELVETICA souhaite avant tout créer un réseau de relations et de communication en fédérant celles et ceux qui étudient ces documents ou s’y intéressent, en premier lieu en Suisse, mais aussi à l’international. En outre, l’Association oeuvrera auprès des institutions, bibliothèques, musées, archives, collections privées, qui possèdent des collections d’imprimés éphémères afin de les sensibiliser à l’intérêt de ces documents et à la nécessité de les préserver, répertorier, numériser et valoriser.

Since the beginning of the printing press, ephemera encompass a group of texts whose intrinsic fragility and use have all but lead to their disappearance. They consist of modest works, mass-produced and sold at low prices, destined to a broad public that included uneducated, even illiterate persons. Within their pages, one could find ballads, abridged versions of novels or popular plays, accounts of real or fictional events of national or local importance giving prominence to bandits and murderers, poems, songs and comedies, calendars, or even pious texts. These documents constitute an essential counterpart to the study of history and canonical literary works. They provide clarifications on a number of domains, particularly popular culture, the history of the book, the circulation of ideas and images, processes of re-writing, and the importance of oral transmission.

Though texts and accounts published in the form of ephemera survive to this day in many places around the world, they constitute an important part of Europe’s bygone past. The disappearance of such a traditional editorial activity, along with the loss of the printed objects themselves, compels us to study these publications and preserve what is becoming a fading memory. Geneva – a city which holds an important place in European print history – is also the place of the conservation of various collections of French and English booklets, of Spanish pliegos de cordel, and Brazilian prints. It is in this city that EPHEMERA HELVETICA, the Swiss Association for the Study of Chapbooks and other cheap prints, has decided to establish its headquarters.

The aim of the EPHEMERA HELVETICA Association is to promote the study of these prints among researchers established in Switzerland, irrespective of their language, nationality, or area of study. From linguistics through musicology, to history, sociology, and ethnology: regardless of the area being studied, EPHEMERA HELVETICA wishes, above all, to create a network of relations and communication by bringing together those who study or are interested in these documents — first of all in Switzerland, but also globally. Furthermore, the Association will work to raise awareness among institutions, libraries, museums, archives, and private collections containing ephemera of the interest of these documents and the necessity to preserve, catalogue, and digitalise them.
